Aki Mataumoto is the youngest of five children born to Japanese immigrants. Aki’s physical appearance leads him to lead a secluded life at the family nursery. Though crippled in body his mind is not. Aki becomes a brilliant, self-trained expert in botanical research.
He and his pet cat Neko are prospecting the Huʻehuʻe lava field in search of rare plant specimens when they make two world-shattering discoveries.The first is an amazing planimal he names Shiranai. As Aki prepares to transport it to the Mataumoto Nursery, he makes the second find … an undiscovered lava tube and the mummified remains of a WW II Japanese aviator swaddled in a parachute, still clutching his log book. It tersely chronicles the fateful events leading to his death on December 7, 1941 and reveals an astounding surprise.
Aki soon discovers Shiranai is evolving! It exudes a substance he calls Enkindler to merge with the genetic material of other living and dead creatures. Worse, still, it’s becoming self-aware. What happens if Shiranai obtains human DNA? When others around him learn of his find and its potential, they begin to act in their own self-interest. Betrayed and without allies, Aki makes a desperate choice to stop the creature he has unwittingly unleashed upon the world … to use the Enkindler to resurrect the mummified Japanese aviator and the secret he holds.
