Man-chine

NASA has found a way to project the conscious mind of men into robots over extreme distances and all in mere seconds. The Five men and one woman (3 astronauts and 3 convicts) of Baker Trick are working out the kinks of the system on the moon where America is constructing the first permanent moon base called Hab 1 inside a lava tube below the lunar surface. Suddenly all communication with Earth is severed. Their bodies cocooned on Earth will die if their minds and bodies are not regularly reunited. Despite their differences the team is left to sort out the problem on their own.
As the time allotted time for the unification of mind and body expires and no solution has been found they must deal with the reality that their conscious minds are almost certainly trapped inside their robot housings. Most of Baker Team lapses into a deep depression; to make it worse the team leader commits suicide (switches off).
Then, to everyone’s surprise a signal from earth is received; a series of dot and dash flashes in old Morse code. They can read the message but can’t respond because they lack the equipment. Gradually they discover an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) War was waged earth. Then one of them remembers several Apollo missions had brought the very equipment needed to reply. The Apollo 15 landing site is the nearest and two are sent to try to retrieve the equipment.
On the way their rover is swamped in a dust pool where they discover life on the moon and the fate of one who had left the Hab earlier to go mountain climbing. With these discoveries and what they find at the Apollo 15 landing site, they begin to understand what really has happened back on Earth and devise a plan to counteract it.
