Creatures of Habit

thumbnailWe join unconventional Vatican mystic Monsignor Thomas Steele of the Vatican’s paranormal section on his first adventure, an entrant in the punishing Dakar endurance rally. Steele thunders through the Atacama Desert, Chile, driest spot on Earth on his BMW racing bike when he’s ordered to visit the Handmaidens of Christ the Healer Convent, a fortress like refuge for sisters suffering from psychiatric disorders.

On arriving, Steele learns the reason for his call: Residents behind these cloistered walls are being attacked and found pregnant … but how? Most are beyond child bearing age. Steele receives polite but grudging support from local clergy, when he raises the possibility that the menace may be temporal, not spiritual.

From a local Mapuche Indian and convent handyman, Steele learns the convent was built on the bones of an old Spanish fort which in turn was erected upon the ruins of an ancient Incan citadel. He regales the Monsignor with legends of the Chonchon, a race of night creatures who were here when his ancestors arrived 12,000 years ago.

With Esmeralda (Izzy) his 16th century spiritual guide and a feral cat named Gato, Steele moves from adventure to adventure seeking to discover the true nature of the threat. As he does, we learn more about this complicated man of action, his murky past and his bitter-sweet love, lost but not forgotten.
